The North-East area captures the six city council wards, namely, Barton and Sandhills, Headington, Quarry and Risinghurst, Headington Hill and Northway, Marston and Churchill. The area is predominantly residential but with a number of large health and educational organisations based within it. These are: Hospitals:
There is also a new children's hospital on the John Radcliffe site, and services that were originally at the Radcliffe Infirmary in central Oxford, moved to the John Radcliffe and Churchill hospital sites. Although the area benefits from these institutions, there are ongoing issues regarding traffic congestion, parking and pedestrian safety. Both the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust and Oxford Brookes have regular meetings with local residents groups and councillors. There is a district shopping centre at Headington with neighbourhood shopping areas in Barton, Northway, Wood Farm and Marston. The area has a large number of active Residents, Tenants and Community Associations. There is also a co-ordinating committee of Headington Residents' Associations which helps the networking between groups and also to take issues forward jointly. The main areas of social housing are council-owned homes in Barton, Churchill and Northway wards. The Parks and open spaces within the area include:
There are also a number of recreation grounds and special areas of conservation, which include Shotover Hill, Magdalen Quarry (Geological), New Marston meadows and Rock Edge (Geological) and Warneford Meadow.
