Last year it was the Liberal Democrat administration that was putting the Covered Market under threat with poor maintenance and a huge hike in rents to stall holders. Oxford Conservatives mounted a Save the Covered Market Petition. We collected over 3,000 signatures and the petition was presented to the Council at their meeting on June 30th 2008. We received no formal response from the now, Labour administration. Paul Austin Sargent tabled a question at the October meeting of the Council demanding an explanation for the lack of any response to the petition and a progress report to date. Mr Sargent received a promise of £50,000 worth of investment in repairs to the Market Hall and a commitment of regular meeting between the Council and the market holders. It now appears that Labour are going back on their undertaking. Headington Hill & Northway Conservative team leader, Marc Borja said, "It appears that Labour are reneging on their promise to the market traders and the people of Oxford. We need to keep the pressure up on this administartion to do the right thing by our Covered Market."
